Rosh Hashana, the Jewish New Year, begins tonight, heralding the “High Holidays”. This time of profound significance, which ends with Yom Kippur, comes during a period characterized by conflict and growing anti-Semitism.
October 7, 2023 marked a turning point. On this Simchat Torah, exactly 50 years after the Yom Kippur War, a day of joy became a day of mourning. Since then, Israel has faced continuous terror. At the same time, the country is facing increasing criticism from the international community.
The accusations of double standards in the UN are particularly alarming. In 2023, the UN General Assembly passed 15 resolutions against Israel – but only 7 against all other countries combined. This imbalance raises legitimate concerns.
There are also worrying developments in Germany, a traditional ally of Israel. The federal association RIAS recorded a dramatic increase in anti-Semitic incidents: from 6 to 68 per day. Israel-related anti-Semitism accounted for 53% of all incidents.
Iran’s recent, unprecedented direct attack on Israel underlines the volatility of the situation. But there is hope: in many cities around the world, people gathered to express their solidarity with Israel and stand up against anti-Semitism.
In this new year 5785, the shofar blowing takes on a special significance. This ritual instrument, made from a ram’s horn, symbolizes the call for reflection and unity with its penetrating sound. It is a reminder of the power of renewal and resistance.
Our thoughts are with the brave soldiers of the IDF, the hostages still being held and all the innocent civilians suffering in this conflict.
May this Rosh Hashana mark the beginning of a new era. An era in which understanding and respect triumph over hatred and violence. It is time to take stronger action against anti-Semitism and stand up for the safety of Jewish communities worldwide.
